HOW COMPUTERS CAN BE A TOOL, TUTOR AND TUTEE

Computers are one of the greatest inventions ever known to man. It is so powerful that it helps in almost everything that we do in our life. In the perspective in the field of education, computers can act as a tool, a tutor, and a tutee.

First of all, computers can be a tool for the purpose of education. The basic programmes of a computer such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and others helps both students and teachers in every education process that they go through. Computers have the potential to help students to have a better understanding of what an educator teaches in class. For example, a student will find it easier to understand lecture notes that are typed and printed out compared to  handwritten notes. Lecture notes that are printed out have a consistent layout, unlike handwritten notes that may become inconsistent when the educator gets tired of writing towards the end of the note. In educators' side of perspective, it gives them a wider variety of how to teach their students and not only using the traditional and boring chalk-and-chalkboard method. An educator can easily download presentation programmes such as Prezi and use them to teach a new chapter in tutorial classes, with a touch of creativity that will attract the attention of the students. Thus, the students will understand better and quicker about the topic explained by the educator.

Second, computers can also be a tool in educational activities. Computers cannot totally replace an educator and their roles to teach in classrooms as we still need human-to-human interaction during classes, instead computers help to reduce the burden carried along with the responsibility as an educator. Computers have the ability to provide a learning environment, deliver learning instructions, reinforces learning through drill and practice, and also provide feedbacks to the educators.

Third, computers can act as a tutee in educational activities. For example, an educator wants to teach his students about how to create a website. The educator can use a computer as a tutee to guide his students. He can show steps on how to create a website and project it so that each of his students have a clearer view of the steps. When the educator use a computer as a step-by-step guide, the computer is actually playing a role as a tutee to help the students. This is important so that the students can absorb the steps better and practice them on their own.

As a conclusion, computers are not limited as a tool in educational activities. It can also act as a tutor or a tutee in those activities.
